Talvipyöräilystä

Pitäisin talvipyöräilystä jos se ei olisi niin raskasta
seitsemäs vaihde onkin hangessa tyyliin vaihde 25
eikä loskassa pidä mikään vaikka maksaisi nastoista kuinka paljon
ja kun kengänpohja on kuussenttinen niin satulaputki loppuu kesken

Ja pakkasilma on niin kuivaa ja kovaa hengittää
(villahuivin läpi ei niin, kunnes siihenkin jäätyy kiteet kiinni)
Eikä lumen keskellä viitsi ilman kenkiä viilettää
Ja takki painaa ja kaikki painaa

Pitäisin talvipyöräilystä jos en vihaisi talvea
Kylmyys vie voimista suuren osan ja pimeys sen mitä jää jäljelle
auringon näkee ehkä tuurilla keskipäivällä ikkunasta
sen kylmän ja kovan valon ja hanget, joiden häikäisy sattuu silmiin

Ja kun luulee sen loppuvan
kun tietää sen loppuvan

Winter Cycling

I’d enjoy cycling in winter if it wasn’t so burdensome
in the snow seventh gear is pretty much gear 25
and nothing holds fast in the slush, no matter how much you pay for ice grips
and when your shoes have six-centimetre soles, your seat tube isn’t long enough

And the frosty air is so dry and difficult to breathe
(not so bad through a woollen scarf till even that freezes with ice crystals)
And I don’t want to dash around in the snow without shoes
And my coat is heavy and everything feels heavy

I’d enjoy cycling in winter if I didn’t hate winter
The cold steals most of your strength and the darkness steals what’s left
if you’re lucky you can glimpse the sun at midday out of a window
that cold and hard light, and the snowdrifts whose brightness hurts your eyes

And when you think it’s going to end
when you know it will end
And when you think it’s finally going to end
when you know spring is on the way
It’s only beginning

I’d enjoy cycling in winter if it was something completely different
